Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is one of the most significant festivals of Sanatan Dharma or Hinduism. Diwali is celebrated on the 15th day in the month of Kartika as per the Hindu lunar calendar. Diwali also known as the ‘Festival of Lights’ symbolizes the victory of good over evil. There are numerous stories and legends associated with the Diwali festival. The most popular one being the return of Lord Rama to His kingdom of Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and His victory over the demon king Ravana. To welcome him, the people of Ayodhya lit oil lamps (diyas) to light His path. This tradition of lighting lamps continues today, symbolizing the removal of darkness and ignorance from one’s life. During Diwali, homes are decorated with lights, diyas and rangoli, while families gather for prayers and special feasts. On this day worship is offered to Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. People also exchange gifts, sweets, and perform Puja for happiness, prosperity, health and success.
