Ashtavinayaka are the eight forms of Lord Ganesha, the God of wisdom, knowledge, intellect, success, remover of obstacles and auspicious beginnings. ‘Ashta’ means eight and ‘Vinayaka’ is one of the names of Lord Ganesha. Primarily in the Indian state of Maharashtra, Lord Ganesha is worshiped in His Ashtavinayaka forms. During the Ashtavinayaka Puja, Lord Ganesha in revered and worshiped in all of His eight different forms which are Vakratunda, Ekadanta, Mahodara, Gajanana, Lambodara, Vikata, Vighnaraja and Dhumravarna. Each form or manifestation of Ashtavinayaka possesses distinct qualities and abilities. They are worshipped and revere for distint blessings and benefits, together they are worshipped for overall growth, success, prosperity and abundance. Devotees also undertake pilgrimage to the eight abodes of Lord Ashtavinayaka. Traditionally, the pilgrimage starts at the Mayur¬shwar or Vigneshwara Temple in Morgaon, where Lord Ganesha is revered as the preeminent Deity, Mayur¬shwar. According to belief, offering prayers to each of the eight incarnations of Lord Ganesha at specific intervals bestows many blessings and grants the desires and wishes of devotees.
