What is a Yantra?

Yantra is a Sanskrit word which means a machine or instrument. As per Vedic scriptures Yantras are schematic representation of a mantra. When activated or energized using the beej mantra they bless the user with the required benefit. A Yantra which is also known as Mandala encompasses within itself the required geometry or form energy of a mantra or Deity programmed into them. There are many Yantras, many of which as per ancient scriptures were revealed by the Divine themselves, others were revealed to/by Yogis and ancient sages in their deep state of mediation. The properties and benefits of various Yantras are glorified in almost all Vedic texts, the first reference to Yantras can be found in the most sacred and ancient Veda, the Rig Veda. When placed in a particular direction and activated through Pran Pratistha Puja (Energization) using the beej mantra a Yantra resonates at a specific frequency which the geometry of the Yantra holds. During ancient times Yantras were used extensively in architecture especially during construction of a temple. Yantras can be made by etching the geometry on various surfaces such copper, silver, gold, Bhoj Patra and more, many a times they are hand drawn on the ground, at the Puja altar or on the walls of a temple or home.
