In Sanatan Dharma, there is special significance given to Shraadh Puja, a ritual conducted after death in the family. Shraddha Puja is a sacred Hindu ritual performed to honor and pay homage to one’s deceased ancestors, expressing gratitude and seeking their blessings for the well-being of the family. The word Shraddha means faith and devotion. During the Puja the deceased soul is offered food, water and worship, the Puja helps the departed soul on its journey in the afterlife and also be at peace. As per scriptures souls that have unfulfilled desires or attachments or have died an unnatural death find it hard to let go of the material world and they wander the world and don’t find peace. This leads to Pitru Dosha for coming generations; the Shraadh Puja helps the deceased soul on their path to Moksh and also mitigates the malefic effects of Pitru Dosha for natives.
Shraddha Puja helps remove malefic effects of Pitru Dosha, removes hurdles and obstacles, and brings harmony, prosperity and growth to the family. By honouring and satisfying the souls of departed ancestors, the ritual is believed to bring peace to both the departed and the family. During the Puja Pind daan, and Tarpan daan is done which is offering of food and water. Pindi which is a rice ball is made symbolizing the departed and offered worship and various sacred articles. The Shraddha Puja is done during the Pitru Paksha period compulsorily every year, but it is also done during course of the year as well.
