Om Namah Shivaya is also called the 'Panchakshari Mantra' as it is composed of five syllables and chanting it is one of the most easiest yet potent way to worship and revere Lord Shiva. The mantra ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ means I bow to Lord Shiva or I bow to Divinity within me. It is believed that Om Namah Shivaya is the first mantra that ever came in to existence and was created by Lord Shiva Himself. It is also believed that the mantra Om Namah Shivaya is first mentioned in the Rig Veda, although it is not mentioned as a specific phrase in its entirety but the individual components of the mantra 'Om', 'Namah' and 'Shivaya' are all mentioned. The mantra in its entirety is first mentioned in the Yajur Veda and later in the Shiva Purana and Linga Purana. The Om Namah Shivaya is regarded as one of the most sacred and potent mantra in Shaivism, using which the Shiva tattva in the Universe can be invoked.
